Gracie Barra Apperley Bridge & York

The Gracie Barra academies at Apperley Bridge and York represent the creation and enhancement of dedicated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training facilities designed to support one of the world’s leading martial arts organisations. The projects focused on delivering a full academy fit-out at Apperley Bridge, alongside support works and enhancements at the York location to improve functionality and training environments.

Working closely with the client, the objective was to create professional, durable training spaces aligned with the global standards and identity of Gracie Barra while ensuring both academies could operate efficiently and provide a welcoming environment for students.

As principal contractor for the Apperley Bridge academy and supporting contractor for works at York, we delivered a coordinated programme of interior fit-out, specialist flooring installation, and building service upgrades to create high-quality martial arts training environments.

PROJECT GOALS

  • Deliver a fully fitted Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy at Apperley Bridge

  • Provide supporting works and improvements at the York academy

  • Create safe, durable training environments designed for intensive daily use

  • Provide functional layouts supporting instruction, training, and academy operations

  • Deliver a coordinated mechanical, electrical, and construction package

PLANNING AND DESIGN

The planning phase focused on reconfiguring the two-floor layout to support multiple bar environments while maintaining smooth customer flow and high acoustic performance. Custom metalwork, artisan finishes, and in-house furniture manufacturing allowed for a fully coordinated design language.

Venetian plastering by Arch Venetian became a central design feature, used across walls and bar areas to create a signature textural effect. Durability, atmosphere, and acoustic comfort were major considerations, influencing the choice of materials, flooring, and wall systems.

Lighting, sound, and mechanical design were fully integrated from the outset to ensure both performance and ambience, with systems engineered to adapt to varied hospitality requirements throughout the day and night.

CONSTRUCTION

Unit Preparation & Strip-Out – Support with preparation of the Apperley Bridge unit to accommodate the new academy layout.

Internal Fit-Out – Support with construction of reception areas, changing spaces, and ancillary facilities supporting the training environment.

MEP Works – Mechanical and electrical works including lighting and ventilation to support the training spaces.

Compliance & Management – Site management, safety coordination, and project delivery across both locations.

PROJECT EXECUTION

The project required the complete strip-out of the existing warehouse interior, followed by extensive structural works to reconfigure the internal layout and support the new two-floor design. Acting as principal contractor, we managed all aspects of the redevelopment — from structural engineering through to final finishes.

Custom metalwork was fabricated and installed throughout to define architectural features, support the bar layouts, and create a bespoke contemporary aesthetic. Two fully built bars were constructed, including the Uber Cool Whiskey Lounge — a standout space designed for a premium customer experience.

All mechanical and electrical services were delivered in-house, including a new electrical supply and full integration of sound, lighting, and specialist hospitality systems. Windows were replaced to enhance insulation and appearance, while new soundproof flooring was installed to meet the dual needs of a lively games venue and late-night bar.

Working collaboratively with Arch Venetian, we installed Venetian plastered walls and bar fronts, giving the interior a luxurious, handcrafted finish. All furniture was manufactured and installed in-house, ensuring cohesive visual quality and a highly tailored fit for the space.

The result is a multi-functional hospitality environment with a bold identity, high-quality materials, and a completely reimagined internal structure.

OUTCOME

The Gracie Barra projects at Apperley Bridge and York demonstrate how tailored fit-out and targeted improvement works can support the growth of specialist training facilities.

Through coordinated delivery, durable materials, and careful attention to the academy’s operational needs, the projects created professional martial arts environments that reflect the standards and identity of Gracie Barra while providing safe, functional spaces for students to train and develop.
